Better to Go Mad in the Wild (Raději zešílet v divočině) – 2025 Czech‑Slovak Documentary

Better to Go Mad in the Wild is a poetic doc‑fiction portrait of twin brothers František (Franta) and Ondřej (Ondra) Klišík, who have spent decades living in near-total isolation in the Šumava forests on the Czech–Austrian border. They live in a dilapidated farmhouse without modern conveniences, sharing everything: thoughts, meals, routines… yet Franta dreams aloud of escape and flying, while Ondra remains deeply rooted in the only life he knows.

The film takes a minimalist, immersive approach—no presenters, no overt narration. Instead, wildlife routines, interior clutter, and everyday rituals become the language of a story about choice, identity, and duality. The brothers do everything together—smoke, drink, bicker, philosophize—but even their affectionate routines carry hints of tension: “separating twins is like breaking a mirror.”

Through intimate long takes, the film becomes subjective—visually drawing the viewer into a world where cows chew on beards and silence speaks louder than words. A surreal voice-over is occasionally provided by Nandy, a majestic bull, giving the audience glimpses into nature’s perspective on human solitude.

Themes include:

  • Rebellion vs. Routine: Franta’s longing for freedom contrasts sharply with Ondra’s acceptance of stasis—even within symbiosis.

  • Nature as Mirror: The forest, animals, and rhythms of the land reflect the emotional and existential lives of the brothers.

  • Individuality within Identity: Even genetically identical, the twins are soulfully different—and aware of it.

  • Decent Into Myth: The brothers, former Velvet Revolution pamphleteers, became symbols of defiance by choosing collective withdrawal.

The film’s tone shifts gently—from curiosity to contemplation, from humor to tragedy. It’s revealed that Franta drowned the day after the film won the Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary, adding powerful resonance to meditations on death, legacy, and isolation.

Better to Go Mad in the Wild is not just a documentary—it’s a meditation on solitude, identity, and the choices that define a life lived off-grid, offering a quiet revolution in storytelling itself.
